Privex Amsterdam Netherlands Expansion Pre-orders 27 JUN 2021

Privex Amsterdam (Netherlands) Expansion - Pre-orders 27 JUN 2021

At Privex ( https://www.privex.io ), we'll soon be launching our new autonomous region - Amsterdam, The Netherlands - with the current ETA for the first customers to be able to test out the region being sometime between July 15th and July 31st 2021.

Progress

28 / MAY / 2021

On the 28th of May 2021, our first device was installed into our rack - our Cisco N9K series switch / core router.

We setup our N9K, including our transit via fibre (notice the yellow wire coming out of the switch - that's a fibre cable).

13 / JULY 2021

On the 13th of July 2021, our first server arrived from our 3 order batches (spread between vendors, one UK vendor, one NL vendor, one US vendor).

We had the server installed into the rack, to avoid paying storage fees while waiting on the rest of our orders - but it wasn't connected to the network yet, as we were awaiting an order containing various network cables, as well as an order containing our 48-port 10GBase-T RJ45 switch for us to connect the IPMI into.

27 / JULY / 2021

At this point, both our Dell R620's + Cisco N2K Fabric Extender (switch) from the UK, and our ASRock Ryzen servers from the US had arrived within the past week or so, so it was finally time to finish installing our phase 1 servers + switches in our rack.

On the 27th of July 2021, our Cisco N2K (not visible in photo, was installed after photo was taken), 5x Dell PowerEdge R620's, and 4x ASRock Ryzen servers were installed into our Amsterdam rack, and they were all connected between our Cisco N9K + N2K.

What is an "autonomous region"?

For those who aren't aware what "autonomous region" means for customers, it means we'll have/be able to:

  • We'd legally physically own/control all dedicated servers we've colocated in the region

  • We'd legally own and operate our own physical network hardware (switches/routers/etc.), helping to protect your traffic from spying, as well as giving us effectively full control over how we operate the network

    • Transit Connectivity: 1gbps at time of writing via Hurricane Electric, but we plan to upgrade to 10gbps within the first month or so after we have some customers in NL
    • Peering Connectivity: None at time of writing, but we plan to connect to AMS-IX with at least 1gbps within the next few weeks.
  • We'd be operating using our own IPv4 and IPv6 space, which means that abuse emails for customer servers in NL go to us - for us to decide how to handle, not the datacenter / hosting provider that we use.

  • All of this combined, allows us to offer the maximum security, privacy, and flexibility to customers who choose one of our autonomous regions (currently we only have one live autonomous region: Sweden, with Amsterdam launching in the next few weeks)

Information about our bandwidth policy terminology

  • Effectively Unmetered (EUM) is a fair use bandwidth policy that applies to generally all Privex server packages which say "Unmetered" - unless they explicitly state that they're "Fully / 100% Unmetered".

In simple terms - effectively unmetered means a customer can use as much traffic as they want on that server - as long as any high traffic usage has a reasonably short end date - i.e. all high-speed transfers / traffic spikes will end within 24-72 hrs.

Effectively Unmetered IS NOT SUITABLE for persistent 24/7 traffic at >=50mbps, for example, operating a Tor node (whether relay or exit), or running a torrent seedbox which is constantly uploading or downloading torrents.

Read more about Effectively Unmetered (EUM)

  • Fully Unmetered (FUM) is a bandwidth policy which specifies that you may use as much bandwidth as you like, at whatever download/upload speed you like (of which your server is capable of, and which the network is setup to allow you to use), for as long as you like.

Unlike Effectively Unmetered (EUM) - Fully Unmetered means there's no restriction on how long you can max out your internet speed / or make transfers at high speeds, as this plan/policy is specifically intended for customers who may be using a large amount (or all) of their network speed capacity 24/7 due to P2P applications, operating a heavily used file server, and/or other applications/services that consume a large amount of traffic persistently.

Read more about Fully Unmetered (FUM)

  • Fair Use generally refers to Privex's Fair Use Sub-Plan A (FAIR-A), aka "Strict Fair Use", though in some cases it may refer to Effectively Unmetered (EUM) (Relaxed fair use limitations over the fully unmetered policy).

The "(Strict) Fair Use" policy is designed to protect Privex from extremely high "burst" charges caused by customers using more than our committed transit speeds for too much time in one month. The "(Strict) Fair Use"'s rules can mostly be summed up in two lines:

If you're on a "Strict Fair Use" networking plan, you must avoid using more than ~200mbps for more than 20 hours per month (roughly 30 minutes per day on avg). With a 1gbps network connection under our Strict Fair Use plan, this equates to roughly a 9 TB per month bandwidth cap.
